A traction engine, also called a locomotive or "traction engine", is a mobile steam engine, evolved from the stationary steam engines used in the second half of the 18th century. They have mainly colored the agricultural landscape. The "big boom" of the popularity, production and application of steam engines in agriculture and road transport must be situated approximately between 1880 and 1920. It is during this period that by far the most traction machines were built. The steam tractors were very similar to the road locomotives, but they were usually smaller. The average weight was around 2 to 3 tons, and models that could be operated by one person never weighed more than 5 tons. The intention was that they pulled medium loads, but also implements for working the land. Stationary they were in use on the farm by connecting the overhead flywheel with a drive belt to a thresher, forage harvester or other. Although they were no longer built, steam tractors continued to be used until the 1930s. Image size: 260 x 360 mm
