Out Of The Fog Bank

This is a rendition of the Whaleship "Wanderer" as she breaks through a land based fog bank. She is headed out to sea, for yet another 3-1/2 year voyage collecting whale oil and ivory, in the Mid-Eighteen Hundreds. One of the last great sail powered whalers to originate from New Bedford, Ma., U.S.A.

Very nice work Dr. Painting the rigging is challenging, and I am at the stage I can do them without reference although never been on a ship. Once you understand what the function of them is it speeds up the process.

Artist Reply: Thank you very much ! Yes, you are correct, the rigging is the most difficult part of accuracy in drawing/painting square rig ships or any other kind for that matter. It makes the diference between a good painting and a so-so painting. I would Love to see some of yours !

Thank you for your comment on "Aneroid". I painted all the whaling ships out of New Bedford, Ma. I have an old b&w book of whaling ship photos. My painting was of the stern going out.

Artist Reply: First of all, thank you Nancy & Joanna! Secondly, my nickname is ShueDoc, because when I worked a a Designer / Developer in the Fashion Footwear industry, one of my close associates started calling me "Doc" because I could "fix" anything that was wrong with the shoes we were making, and it just "stuck" (it also happens to be my first two innitials !) Thanks for you compliments !
