Started a new drawing tonight. “Erin” 9 x 12 graphite on Strathmore (300 series) Bristol Smooth paper.
I started by drawing on plain old printer paper using a Pentel P205 mechanical pencil with a 2B lead. My line drawing is a mess, it looks like a 2 year old did it but it’s one of the most important parts of my process - it’s the foundation of the drawing. If the line drawing isn’t right then the likeness just won’t be there. I use my line drawing as a map to not only mark where I want the features of the face, but where I want light and shadow as well. Once I am content (I never say happy because I am never happy with work, always room for improvement) I transfer my line drawing to my actually drawing paper which is Strathmore 300 series Bristol smooth paper. I can now start to add tone and texture to bring Erin to life on paper.
