Light and dark are very important aspects of art. For some reason I began thinking that prior to electric lighting in cities, street lamps were lit each evening by lamplighters to provide light that somewhat compensated for the darkness of night that was descending. At dawn, they retraced their steps to extinguish these same lamps and return the cities to natural light. This train of thought led me to search out items for a still life scene that might be symbolic of this past daily ritual. A candle sniffer, a partially used candle, and a candle holder that somewhat resembles the earth (made by my younger son while he was in high school) was all that was needed. With dramatic lighting set, I photographed the scene and used this photograph as the basis for the colored pencil painting entitled "Last Light of Day". It is done on Grafix drafting film using Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils. The size of the unframed artwork is 18 X 12 inches.
