Cedar waxwing caught in mid-hop

Photo I captured while the Cedar Waxwing was trying to hop and then snag a big crab apple that he could not reach from any branch that would support his weight. They seem funny in that way, willing to go to all ends of the earth to get the BIGGEST and to heck with conserving energy.

Very nice capture, Amy !!!!!!! I am happy to see that there is a lot of food for him!!!!

Artist Reply: There were around 200 of these fellas that stopped by for a period of 4-5 days on their migration north (and do so on their way south again in the fall) to gorge themselves on these mini crab apples. The apartment complex that I live in (which houses over 4,000 people) have hundreds of these trees and other small fruit-bearing trees planted on the property so this is like a Cedar Waxwing's version of an Oasis in the middle of a desert during their spring and autumn migrations.
