A Gentle Touch

"Two skillful kite flyers demonstrate the versatility and control they have flying these Revolution kites by bringing them tip to tip with a 'gentle touch'."

Artist comment: "The 'Rev's' (as they are affectionately called) are exciting to fly and fun to watch as the kite masters put them through their paces. They can be made to go up, down, and sideways. They can spin, and hover inches from the ground or tip to tip as shown here. This painting is pastel on Canson Mi-Teintes textured paper. The setting is on the beach at Long Beach, Washington at the international kite festival. I painted the scene with the dunes in the background to indicate an onshore breeze. It is a bright overcast day, so no shadows are obviously visible. The kites come in a variety of color combinations and designs. I sketched the kites first, then did the background (even the footprints in the sand). Then the fun part! I painted the kites starting with the lightest lights working to the black. The final touch was putting the name on the kites and painting the lines."

Carol: this is an amazing pastel painting! The subject is amazing, but the really inspiring aspect is the colors and the detail you have rendered. This is not easily accomplished using pastel. I for one, love detail and do photorealistic colored pencil paintings. I began using pastel pencils, but then switched to Prismacolor Verithin colored pencils. If you have time, please stop by an have a look at my work. Best regards, Will
