Evening Skies over Calver

In all my paintings I borrow the best "skies" I can find to compliment the painting. These moody skies came from a little book on cloud formations. I first saw this view of Calver about 10 years previously. On a journey back from a day out in Derbyshire, we were driving down a country road banked with glorious wild rhododendrons on the opposite hillside. Just as they were going out of view, I glimpsed the view of the rooftops of old Calver Village. I thought that one day I would find the view again and paint it. It took me a while to find that same view point again. This year on a precarious spot on the bend of a road with busy lorries, I sketched the view. To include the Eyre Arms at one end and the Derwentwater Arms and Old Post Office at the other end, required a little moving of a roof or too, and a little artistic licence. This is only one part of the Calver village (Calver Sough), with some lovely old cottages set around the village cross, which is just visible at the right side of the painting.
