Thanks for your help. Your levels adjustment is definitely an improvement in bringing out the detail. In my original photo, the sun was catching the river bank in the distance and throwing the trees into deep shadow, so I used levels to bring up the detail on the tree trunks.

I then used the mask on the adjustment layer to balance the shot, toning down the distant river bank (which by this time was too bright). Maybe I overdid the mask - I could have left this area a bit brighter, as you did.

The extra saturation you added has brightened up the whole image - the trouble with this is that the greens have lost their original value. The original photo managed to capture the colour of the grass and foliage as they really looked. The greens in the woods round Killarney have a special quality that I haven't seen anywhere else in the country, and it would be a pity to lose it. I think the extra saturation has taken away some of that authenticity, so although it makes a "better" picture, it could now be anywhere in the world!

Although I would disagree on this one point, I really appreciate your taking the time to work on my picture and to give me the benefit of your experience - thanks again!
