ARCHES National Park Photography

I just finished looking at MARKOS Arches on his website.....and i am glad to say i was inspired greatly and now i have itchy feet.

Markos you have beautiful pieces of ARCHES....Stunning Pieces....I am ready to start preparation to make a trip...It is 4 hour trip from where i am...Not sure what month i will go...

I got all my notes prepared looking at your work....and outlined where i wanna go....I need new tripod and i need two more AT tires...before i start on that trip...

Also i read at archesnationalpark.gov or whatever that weather at 4000-5000 feet could have some factors if i go in January...although do not snow in Southeast utah very often even a small participation can criple the trip...

If i dont bring great results if i go in January i will try begining of march for another attempt....

I cant go end of march or april as i am busy with shows...

I would like to spend a week there...dont know if that will be enough.....but i can always expand to 2 weeks....will take my dog with me ...so i be flexible to do what i want...but definitely will make a trip...it was in a plan when i came to Zion..I also will explore area of CRESCENT CITY and see what kind a places they have to Park my Motorhome...and then next year i might spend my winters there.....So i will be 18 miles from Moab...and that is close enough and get home every night....

I like to catch sunrise and sunset of all those arches...

Anyway when i am ready to go i will post here .....any suggestion is welcome

I don't know where to start, if your up for the hike Delicate Arch is nice at sunset. My favorite place to shoot sunrise (at least in spring) is Courthouse Towers and The Windows. The light is so different in Fall/Winter, be sure to get the LaSals' in the image at some point. Winter might have its disadvantages, but to have snow on the ground would make the images even better.

I haven't had the time to really explore Canyonlands, but its a large area with alot to shoot, there is a arch there that is stunning at sunrise (I was there during the day) but is stunning all the time, the view is just awesome. I wanted to hike around a little, so many sandstone structures just jutting out of nowhere. Those unnamed structures are just as stunning as the named ones... make sure you have good boots or shoes. The temp difference can be drastic at higher elevations... I once went from 99 degrees all day, all the way down to 30 degrees, from rain to hail... all in a tank top and shorts. I'm from Wisconsin, I can handle it LOL.

Hi Markos,

Yes i do have hiking boots.....and where i am now in Zion it goes from Heater to AC its strange...lol...but i love it...

Is DELICATE Arch more then 2 miles hike one way? I do that no worries...I am actualy mainly going cause of Delicate Arch...I think i saw at least 100 images of it ....and i must get that...

What i am planning right now i beleive i will take chance and go in January....cause i dont like crowds...I already called hotels around...to check availability....

I also will take a trip in March there....I been thinking of the Arches in last 2 years and i never made it...Since i am not that far now is the time...

I think i do preffer Arches to Bryce Bryce is nice however its impassable in winter...

I know what u mean when u say dont know where to start lol....However if u ever come to Tetons let me be your guide, i know every inch of it...but make sure u bring good prime lens for wildlife...300 mm recomendable..and will take BEAR SPRAY lol i swear i will keep it locked...lol

BTW i feel much much better today....

Thanks Markos...

For Delicate Arch.... its a nice walk up, pretty much uphill the whole way, but there is lots to see. Bring a flashlight cause its a sunset shot and at least for me I liked to stay there a little longer. Bring a flashlight anyways in case your feeling a longer exposure with a flashlight.

I went there for Delicate Arch but fell in love with Courthouse Towers. Delicate Arch was awesome to see my first time, and each time I went back it was like seeing an old friend.

In January there isn't to many people who visit the park... I want to spend a year there just photographing the park, from January to December.

Gary Glass 17 Nov 2009

Bianca, here is a quote from someone who went there as to what he felt were good times to visit, maybe this will help you as well. at least some other perspectives.

My wife and I go out to Moab from the Denver area frequently, and I would highly recommend anything between October and May. The Summer months are - as other people have already described - packed with tourists and hotter than all-get-out. There's nowhere to hide from the Sun, either.

The local crowds are pretty heavy in October and May, but the tourist crowds are largely gone by then; the locals aren't nearly as bad, and many of them go looking for adventures outside the main scenic areas.

I've had excellent luck in the Winter months; catching the park after a light snow is magical. The mornings can be chilly, and if Moab gets caught in a thermal inversion, it might not get warm all day. But often the temperatures will rise into the 50s even in January.

If you're looking for green growing things, though, go in April-May. By mid-June everything starts to brown up.

another thing I came across that was interesting, was apparently there was a map typo a number of years back and delicate arch was actually what is now called landscape arch and landscape arch was suppose to be the name of the now iconic delicated arch.. makes more sense when you think about it after seeing them.. it did not state what year the typo was , but apparently enough of a error that they just kept the names as they are now..

Thank u Gary for going through the trouble...to get that info for me..U always are so helpful...

I am definitely 100% going to go in January... and plan to stay definitely one week with plan to extend to two weeks in case i get cought in bad weather and bad days so i will have chance to catch that sunset....I might return in March if i like it the way i like it looking at Markos Photos

That was very nice as always u gave me tips and i am so ever thankful...cause i always learned from them...

I hope not to disapoint my fans and i hope to bring great shots...Ofcourse second choice is Balanced rock...that i am loking forward to...

I always have that urge to photograph from different angle..and be different but that might not happen..and might not be possible...Even though there is so many alike shots i dont think anyone can get tired of looking at it...

Markos, I see u like Arches...however some of the images i have seen from you in your state are breathtaking and i yet to come and photograph some..:))

Thank u thank u all for great tips...I am now counting days.....in excitement

I am comfortable with where I shoot here, Greg will tell you the same. I can think images in my head without even being there, or without shooting as long as I have been. When you walk areas (like you have walked the Tetons area) you become familiar with how the light hits certain areas at certain times of the year.

If your reasonably good at taking pictures its hard to fail at Arches.

APHOTO4YOU 17 Nov 2009

Looks like Markos u know your Arches as well as i know my Tetons ......

I am sure i will learn and i will get some shots....have to practice...watch sit and daydream....and just plan...

My shots might not be as good as yours.....but at least that is a start....I will try my best....

Greg has some wonderful images...i have seen his work before....and i like it...

I am going to Arches with idea to photograph scenes and not concentrate on wildlife...

I lost all interest in Zion...its not what I thoguht it is....I am waiting for snow to arrive an dthen i will try once more in Zion...

I just got off the phone with friend of mine from Grand Tetons....BTW they got snow last night there ..looks preety...

We spoke about Arches....She hiked that trail last year to delicate Arch and she says the trail is hardly trail and very rocky ......

She also added coming back at dark is gona be hard and difficult....but possible...

I hiked with her Tetons from Jenny Lake up to that slope up high on top...where they take people on a boat across Jenny Lake...but we hiked al around Jenny Lake ...we didnt take a boat.....

That trail is not bad going up the slope...However she says Delicate Arch trail is nothing as good as the one at Tetons we hiked...

Well i guess i have to see all of that and judge it for myself when i get there...

I hiked Bear Lake in Colorado..some years back...on regular basis...so will see what this is...

I asked her if she came back at night she says no...So that will be some experience..I will make sure to have good flashlight..As i realy wanna get good image of sunset...

markosphoto 23 Nov 2009

its not a trail... follow the stacks of rocks I managed to make it down alone quite a few times... of course I have a large spotlight I use in extreme situations... my trusty flashlight is bright, but nothing like my spotlight. There might not be anyone at the site when your there, so I recommend light sticks, maybe some 8 hour sticks either leave them by your vehicle or every so often on the trail up, just pick them up on the way down. Its not as bad as it seems, unless it had snowed and it might be slippery.

APHOTO4YOU 24 Nov 2009

Okay Markos,

So Delicate Arch is not visible otherwise from nowhere else unless u get up to it?

If it is snow i am not going to go hiking there....I am not young chicken anymore and if i brake bones at this age it would be disaster if its slippery and snow...

I gave up Skiing years ago when i fell real bad at Old Man Mountain in NH

Just have to be careful...i need my leggs still for few years to come...

Will play by ears and see what condition is going to be....Thanks Markos

APHOTO4YOU 24 Nov 2009

I found some description of the Delicate Arch visibility......How good is it i wonder to photograph from viewing point...

I imagine telephoto which i hate the most will come in Handy...if photographed from Viewing point

They talk 5 minutes walk to viewing point i wonder about that?

Gary Glass 24 Nov 2009

The light stick is a great idea Marko.. hopefully some idiot does not take them when you trying to come back... I can see of jerk going,, hmmmm this looks cool as they reach down and take off with it..

B, take batteries along with a powerful flash/spotlight... I just saw a photo someone did after the sunset with star trails.. and they talked about using their flashlight to get back down the trail..

APHOTO4YOU 24 Nov 2009

Gary

I will....I will try to make that trail if its not slippery and ice....Otherwise i will not....

I want to go so bad.... Just dont wanna break bones.....

Thanks

markosphoto 24 Nov 2009

Theres not alot to worry about, snow there isn't the same, but I bet I would be pretty to shoot, the bright reds with a snowy landscape.

The walk up to Delicate Arch is all up hill, the only other way to see it is with a really long lens, from a vantage point to the south, its nothing spectacular.

When you hit the last corner and look up you will think you were in heaven, especially if you've never been there.

Pace yourself, give yourself enough time before sunset to walk up slowly.

Gary Glass 24 Nov 2009

and watch out for the pointy things....and don't worry about those eyes you see in the dark,, they are nothing...LOLL

Just play Teddy Roosevelt and carry a BIG STICK...

It should be fun. but COLD...

APHOTO4YOU 24 Nov 2009
