I act as a manager or publicity agent – or in some cases both – for a few artists. I provide publicity for them but also act as their manager, mentor, and help from the outside looking in. I arrange exhibitions, promote/highlight auctions, plan a year, get artists motivated in their best interests, discuss their themes-series and of course provide publicity. I am managing one (portrait) artist in NZ and have organised a major exhibition for her in September at Queenstown International Airport – this is huge. The first to be held there. The paintings will be hung down the middle of the concourse with lots of information. About 1.45 million go through the airport every year. And they are putting on a gala opening night – and the venue is free. I have also arranged leading public figures to be featured in the exhibition including jeweller Michael Hill, horse rider Mark Todd, Sir Richard Hadlee, ex-stock exchange chairman Eion Edgar (now the Olympic president), Tim Shadbolt and so on. That artist, Deidre Copeland, just won the Wanaka Art Award – the biggest in the South island. Another artist I manage (Hannah Riden) recently won the best NZ landscape artist at the NZ Art Awards in Tauranga. I have arranged an exhibition for her at The George, starting March 7.

The trouble most artists find is their works are fragmented to sustain a modest income – they want to sustain this and it becomes a vicious cycle. I change that by seeing if they want to commit to a major solo series – numbers depending on size, quality and their speed. And there's much more. I have increased my stable of artists this year which is great but I can take a few more this year if you feel any need of advice or support with your work and publicity.
