From half the 16th century till 1922 the channel-traffic between Brussels and Antwerp had to pass this small sluice, at Klein(=little) Willebroek, where the channel flow into the river Rupel and the junction to the Scheldt. Since 1922, a couple of kilometers upstream, a new wide channel to the Scheldt was digged with a more spacious sluice. But the village didn't became a lost place. Today there is a marina, the sluice is renovated, provided of a rather recent drawbridge and a museum telling the history of the channel. Moreover the place is a crossroad of the multitudinous cycling-tracks along the river and the channel and became so popular that on sunny sundays you must be in luck to find a seat in one of the bars or restaurants. Beside this it is, in fact, not the obvious subject to do in waterpainting
