My purpose was to climb to the summit of Japan's third highest mountain, Mt. Oku Hotaka (3,190m) and the day started out in great weather. But it was a long hike up and by the time I reached the tent site by the mountain lodge, clouds had moved in and obscured my view. Climbing to the next peak I sat and waited hoping for the clouds to break by sunset. When they broke it was only for a few seconds and I was able to get only a few shots before the view was lost again. This image was captured with my phone camera from the summit of Mt. Karasawa at 3,110 metres. I discovered on my way back down that the best sunset view was actually from the mountain lodge. The sun came out below the clouds and painted everything in burning ember red. Too bad for me I was too late to get anything but the fading light when I finally made it back down.
