Copyright by Phil Slattery. Untitled-1 was another experiment with depth perception. I was using varying tones of contrasting colors to bring out a sense of depth and to see if I could use black to soften the eyestrain of what would be normally two very contrasty colors: red and blue. I placed the brightest blue in the work's center and darkened it as it drew near a corner. To me, the effect is that the blue seems to dissolve into the black. With red I did the opposite, lightening it gradually into a light yellow. In retrospect, I should have darkened the red gradually as I did the blue, but the effect is still interesting.
