The outflow from an old mine-working in the English Lake District carries dissolved mineral pollutants in the water. These stain the rocks they flow over, turning them bright orange, a jarring note in the landscape.
I'm not sure whether the mine was a working mine, even at the the time the photograph was taken - there were no obvious signs that it was.
