Great Blue Heron

©Delores J. Knowles 2008 -- Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) Standing close to four feet high, the Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) is one of the most majestic of birds. This fellow is a frequent visitor to the pond out back of our home here in Central Florida. Photographed in Lake County, Florida.

You have many lovely shots Delores, but the Great Blue Heron stands out to me. We have many here, your discription suits them to a "T" I love the plumage on this one.

Artist Reply: Thanks for the kind comments you made on my wild bird images. The Anhingas are a common waterfowl here in Florida. They are the only bird that swims completely submerged. I've seen them swim under the water from one side of a pond to the other. They don't have any natural oil in their feathers and so it is necessary for them to sit and dry out their feather after coming up. That's why I can find them quite often sitting like the one I've pictured here.

Yes this is quite the magnificent bird. I lived in Florida most of my life. I came to Seattle in 1989. I miss Fla. very much. All your photos are good. This is a 10 for sure

Artist Reply: Thanks so much for the kind comment on my Great Blue Heron image. I understand how you miss Florida. I grew up here but was away for many, many years, but returned in retirement.

Really like this view - especially the way the feathers stand out. I didn't know they had those black "whisker like feathers" on top. I have one too in my images that doesn't have these.

Artist Reply: Thanks so much for the kind comment about my Great Blue Heron image. Those dark plumes that begin behind the eye and extend off the back of the neck are quite often plastered down by moisture/dirt, etc.

I must say I am very jealous. I live on Lake Huron in Michigan and there is a Great Blue Heron that lives along the shore and apperently he/she is very camera shy. I can't get a photo to save my soul!!! Is a there a trick to it?

Gabriele Swanson 10 Jan 2008
