©Delores J. Knowles 2008 -- The Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus) is portrayed as portents of death in old western and horror movies and can be found throughout the United States and as far south as Argentina. Primarily a scavenger of road kill and other dead flesh, vultures may also kill small animals for food. They are protected in the United States by Federal law. Although from a distance they appear to be an all-over dull black in color, when the sunlight hits their feathers, a multitude of colors can be seen. This fellow was sitting on a post near a pond in Lake County, Florida.

I was the Anonymous Guest listed below this post! I don't know why but my virus protection must destroy sessions cookies....anyway, ; nonymous Guest I love the much maligned buzzard AKA Vulture. They are marvels of efficiency and have a often unappreciated beauty of form and function, and indicate (to yours truly) an obvious guiding hand of design inherent to our natural world. Your enviable photographs are of and above national geographic quality ! (hehe)Anonymous Guest 24 Jan 2008

I wonder if the colors come from the oils the birds have in thier feathers? Just a thought, since the colors remind me of an oil spill. Wonderful piece Delores!Tom Berry 17 Jan 2008
