Goemmer’s Butte and the Southern Sangres
La Veta, Colorado
Goemmer’s Butte is one of several volcanic remnants that litter Huerfano County, Colorado. The lava flows have long since washed down to Kansas and Texas.
Behind the Butte stands the high Sangre de Cristo Mountain range, a wall of rock that extends for more than a hundred miles and rises to over 14,000 feet. It is home to San Isabel National Forest and the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve.
