Self Portrait

It all started with my grade 6 art teacher, Mr Jansen. He must have seen something that no one else did up until then. The shy, chubby kid, who never said "boo”, had made an impression on someone. Lord knows it was the start of something wonderful, which will last a lifetime. My love of ART. He set the course that year with picking one of my drawings to be featured in the newspaper. A yearly sort of school talent show in the local paper. It was that which set the stage for some much needed confidence. Finally something I was good at..Lol We moved my first year of high school then I became very ill. School was at home with a wonderful teacher from the local high school who taught handicap children. But he was the sunshine in those dark days of pain. He had a passion for art and was quite talented himself, Mr White. I will never forget him. Once high school was over and my health improved (into remission) I was nearly 20. By that time you try make up lost time and have fun with friends. Life takes over. Any sort of career is not really thought of then. It wasn't until 2002 that I decided to go back to school. I graduated from the local college with a BA in Graphic Design Production. It was a great life experience but didn't quite meet my expectations. The competitiveness and stress were two things that physically I could not deal with in the real world due to my illness. Having said that, there are no regrets I learned a lot. So here we are now in the present. I work and struggle to continue with my art like quite a few people. Drawing was my main pursuit but more recently painting and photography has taken over. I hope to continue to learn and grow as an artist. I certainly don't profess to be an exceptionally talented one but you do what you love no matter what. So continues the story........
