Cactus with Character

I don't know what this saguaro is trying to tell me, but he seems to be in dead earnest. He was waving all his arms around frantically. :) The saguaro (pronounced "sah war' oh") is a columnar cactus. It grows about a foot in height every ten years. The fruit is very tasty. I like to eat it right off the cactus, but the Tohono O'odham gather it in early July on a ceremonial occasion, and make many different dishes from it, including jelly and liquor. You must harvest it quickly, before the birds get it. The seeds are also edible and rich in protein. © Pat Goltz Thank you for your comments. I greatly appreciate them!
