Medicine Lake in Jasper National Park, Alberta got it's name because of the strange phenomenon of the water level that drops much more quickly than is possible by evaporation alone each summer. Underground channels in the lake allow water to drain out and reappear several kilometres away in Maligne Canyon and in the Athabasca River. By the middle of September, the lake is half drained. From the road above the lake you can clearly see the bottom and when I was there I saw a man walking across the lake! This photo was taken from the far end of the lake, where braided streams run into the lake basin. As the evening twilight filled the sky, the colours reflected in the water below. The dark areas and sand and gravel bars now above the water level.
