Two Power Figures

These two power figures painted side by side may indicate this rock shelter is a place of power. Appendages portruding from the heads of these figures may indicate shamanic powers or out-of-body experiences. This rock shelter is located at a high altitude in southern Big Sur and would have been rather difficult to get to - a great place for a ritualistic retreat. Image copyright Cher Peterson. YEs, I see what you mean. I just realized, the skull, neck and shoulders/back that I was referring to is actually in the rock formation itself, that the drawings are on. They look like to me that they are slightly turned toward each other with their shoulders and heads together. Wonderful....

Does that not appear to be two skulls, the neck and spreading to the shoulders? Thank you for sharing.

Artist Reply: These two figures seem to be whole bodies. You can see the arms extending out from just below the heads. I don't believe any necks are portrayed. Most Native American rock art figures do have protrusions coming from the heads. It may indicate power or out of body experiences. Also notice the two-pronged feet and triangular hands on the figure to the right. Not sure what that means either.
