pages from a sketchbook...or two.

ever since I can remember, I drew, constantly. Its a habit I have never wanted to break. There must be a sketchbook in every car and room in my home, one in my satchel...you got the pixture. With over 37 sketchbooks crammed with strange scribblings, notes, incantations and thoughtscapes, plus a file full of looseleaf drawings on everything from napkins to pieces of newspaper...its out of control. And who wants to. I just keep drawing and doodling until something evolves and grows into the next stage...full color. Drawing has been the basis of almost all of my artwork. Its impossible to discount the power of the simple drawing and its effect on an artist. You might as well tape a pencil to my right index finger. Guess there must be more than one artist out there with lead poisoning because of this habit. These are random sketches, some without any other purpose than to entertain myself. Some were refined to final comp and sold to commercial venues. Beneath just about every painting...is a drawing to guide the artist's brush.

Excellent. Love the idea of keeping one in the car. Can't go anywhere without my satchel. As a youth, I remember being so excited about getting back to my drawing with my newly sharpened pencil, that I accidentaly stabbed my thigh pretty deep with the pencil. The possibility of lead poisoning used to freak me out till I found out graphite is just carbon. Still though, we must be careful with the paints with cadmium, chromium, etc.

Artist Reply: sorry to hear about your accident with the pencil. they do get out of control at times. Its from holding them too firmly in our grip. ;) I agree, cant go anywhere without my journals, it feels wrong, I am lost without being able to record the ideas when they finally come to me.

I've always loved your work! Great sketches and study drawings. I say frame a few of them and call them complete. Alter all, its only done when you say it is. AWESOME!!!

Artist Reply: interesting thought, however frames cost so much and these were only meant to be sketches, no one ever sees these, and I have well over 30 books of them. I use them as Artist's journals to speculate on life and record my thoughts, both visual and mental.

nice sketches...I'll buy them!.

Artist Reply: thanks Francisco... how about a trade? I have been an admirer of your art for quite some time. I am willing to wager that your sketchbooks are loaded with some pretty insane in the membrane visuals that would sear the average eyeball.
