Mono Lake Mineralized Plants

A nice pastel sunset with plants that were mineralized while they were underwater, and are now above Mono Lake's water table. Image copyright Cher Peterson. All rights reserved.

Please tell us more.

Artist Reply: Well... The water level of Mono Lake, which is a saline lake located just east of the Sierra Nevada in volcanic country, was much higher at one time. During the water wars of the 1930s- 1960s, Los Angeles drew huge quantities of water out of the lake and transported it to supply their city . It brought the original water level down by over 2000 feet, exposing shoreline that had been underwater for a LONG period of time. Water is no longer being taken from Mono Lake, but the water level has never been able to return to normal and has become much more saline and mineral-laden, and is undrinkable. In fact, the lake cannot support fish life, with briney shrimp the only survivors that can tolerate the mineral content of this very large lake.
