Down to a Sunless Sea

This is an an original acrylic impasto painting by Tony Broadbent. It is inspired by the poem Kubla Khan. The paint has been applied very thickly and in many layers to achieve a semi - inpressionist painting of a sun setting over a turbulent sea. Thank you. Tony Broadbent

Gorgeous colours. And I just love using paint that thick. Did you use a brush or a palette knife?

Artist Reply: Hi, Kellie in answer soft thick brush several layers, swathes of impasto by knife and less size brush, then finger, spoon and molded thicker by hand - let all layers dry and move - start again x 6 then final soft brush - dry brush hints and highlights = about 4 kilos of paint. Cheers Tony
Artist Reply: brush, knife, fingers, pieces of wood and card - more and more...I'm doing one at the moment - a triptych where the paint is so thick i can hardly lift the canvasses.....work in progress.

What an impressive firey sky! The waves have such wild power!

Artist Reply: Hi Angela - thanks for the comments, I see you get the essence and life of the painting - it is intended to move one inside. Like your Electric Storm, its so internal. Tony
