Trail to the Swamp

The Rim Trial is one of those places close to home that is not very hard, 2 mi. one way, and a hike that I can do while waiting for this heel to shape up. It follows the White River, however, it's 400 ft. above the valley floor along the rim... reason for the trail name. This area is controlled by the Army Corp of Engineers, because of the large earthen dam on the river they built in the 40's. I was raised a short distance from here and should know more of the history....it was built to control flooding downriver that was wiping out towns regularly. Anyway, the trail has a little bit of every kind of forest we have at this elevation....maybe 1000 ft. There are sections of diciduous trees, 2nd growth conifer forest, a sprinkle of old growth cedars and firs, and a pretty good-sized swamp. 2nd photo......Around Easter, I took (and posted) photos of Skunk Cabbage. They were just getting started then, now they are more numerous than a few weeks ago and at least 3 times as big,(3+ ft. tall). They are starting to give off their signature smell, a few weeks from now they should be very fragrant. If you were to step on the mud next to this flower you would be in it halfway to your knee. I promise that you would lose your shoe. :) It's best to stay on the board walks to cross this swamp. Thanks for stopping by!!!! :)
