High Jump

A sad story with this fence. Originally it didn't have the horizontal bar above the finials and after a flower garden made the ground soft, deer would lose their footing while attempting a normal simple jump over the fence. They ended up empaling themselves on the cast steel finials! The horizontal "trip bar" works and now the deer are just embarrassed.

Thank you for solving the problem!! It still looks great!! How high does a fence have to be to keep them out?? They are incredible jumpers!!!

Artist Reply: Thanks, Mary. This fence was designed to keep some dogs in. A deer fence really needs to be eight feet tall to keep deer from jumping! They can pretty much step over this fence, and now thy are safe to do so.

Nice photos Jerry. I've often wondered about those points on iron fences. This is a good solution, better than burning or grinding them off.
