Although light, shadow, and color are important in conveying form and mood to a realistic painting, I have recently come to realize that point of view may be the most effective way an artist can accurately express what inspires them when they first see a scene on which a painting is based. I hope that this is the case with this color pencil painting entitled "Look Beyond the Walls". The decaying walls seen are those of an abandoned mill located on the outskirts of Galena, Illinois. My wife and I were visiting Galena in late November of 2018 and we took a drive. I refer to drives such as this as artistic, photographic field trips. What I found on this field trip was beyond my expectations. As I walked around the perimeter of the decaying stone mill, I found it interesting, but nothing special. It did not speak to me. As I continued to walk, I paused to look through sections of the wall that had broken down enough to enable me to photograph what had initially been unseen. What I found did speak loudly to me. Within the confines of these crumbling walls were trees reclaiming their rightful space; dramatic lighting; shadows of varying tone; texture; beautiful colors; and interesting detail. This piece was done on Grafix drafting film using Farber-Castell Polychromos pencils. The size of the unframed artwork is 18 X 12 inches.
