... this Electro Motive Division (EMD) MP15AC... is a 12-cylinder, 1,500 horsepower, supercharged, 2 stroke diesel-electric Yard Switcher, built in 1976... an ex-Union Pacific (UP/UPY #1412), ex-Soo Line Railroad (SOO #1512), ex-Milwaukee Road (MILW #446), locomotive... currently working since 2018, as S & S Shortline Leasing (SSRX) #1412 in the Western Sugar Cooperative's rail yard at Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Coal loads to fire the plant, get pushed in on this side and refined sugar, in covered hopper cars, are pulled out of the silos on the east side to interchange with the UP. Specialized truck trailers, like the ShirAhul/Beall quad axle "BULLET" bottom dump, line up in rows to deliver raw beets during the harvest. The Western Sugar Cooperative contracts throughout Colorado, Montana, Nebraska and Wyoming. Seasonal farming and the centralized processing of sugar beets is a big deal and a way of life for most of the growers in Western Nebraska. 90% of the Nebraska beet crop is grown in Scottsbluff, Morrill, and Box Butte counties. The entire timeline from seed farm to a bag of sugar, sitting on a grocery shelf, is a tightly coordinated and interwoven operation.
