Drying up on the Rupel

The Rupel is a short, wide, muddy, 12 km long, very tidal-sensitive tributary of the Scheldt. In the past, there was intense shipping traffic as this river gave access to two rivers and two canals that connected major industrial centers in the interior with the port of Antwerp. The swampy area around it was also the center of the production of bricks and roof tiles, which were distributed across the country from the Rupel by ship. Due to major infrastructure works in the 1990s that directly connects the Brussels maritime canal to the Scheldt, shipping traffic there has been considerably reduced today. The watercolor shows an inland vessel, in the first half of the last century, on the quay of the municipality of Niel. The drying up at low tide gave the skipper the opportunity to inspect the hull for damage. Image size: 260 x 360mm

Love your boats Ivo. Clearly your true love subject. Exemplary illustration.

Artist Reply: Thanks for the comment Jim, but apparently you've taken a break with your watercolors (?)
