losandiegopolis

A commisioned work designed as a backdrop for a model train railway encircling the entire office of the president of a major national ad firm. The photoshop montage was assembled from buildings in and around the greater LA area. I altered each building, adding pipes and conduits, unusual industrial structures and machines while weathering and destructing the buildings to give the appearance of a post apocalyptic Southern California City. After layering in these elements I drew a few futuristic buildings in adobe illustrator and then rasterized them and dropped them into the scene. Distance was simulated by by placing semi- transparent atmosphere layers between each building layer as well as blurring each building layer a little more as they recede into the background.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

John Fish 22 Jul 2007

This is great. I've tried to do similar works in photoshop and know how difficult and time-consuming it is to get it to turn out right. I also like the words in the sky like advertisments. Verrry L.A.

Artist Reply: Thank you! Yes it was quite tricky for a number of reasons, the size was 22' x 8' so I had to spend a lot of time checking the splices on the screen because any flaws would be greatly magnified. I had the sets of "Blade Runner" in mind when I did this. Glad you like it and lets just hope it doesn't prove prophetic.

I know nothing about comp/digital art-work but this is doing something to me. The buildings seems to move softly up to the sky, something peaceful is happening.

Artist Reply: Ooh, Thanks for the warm fuzzy descriptive comment, I forgot to mention in the description that it is 22 feet wide. I wonder how you would react to seeing it fullsize. Maybe you'd be induced into a hypnotic dream state and believe you were in a city such as this and then you could write a novel about it which would in turn be made into a movie called "Losandiegopolis" and it would be a modern day "Blade Runner" Oh! I guess my imagination got away from me again. I'd better go get it. Oh no, its in the neighbors yard, Here magi! C'mon girl! C'mon back, that's a good imagination, now you stay! St-a-a-ay, Good Imagination! you wanna biscuit?

I have to agree with everyone else R.R. This image is well constructed & composed. The depth is excellent. The sky is a particular point I enjoy as it reminds me of many of my own images. Very well done.
