Natalie Delighted

This is a portrait I did of a extremely charming little girl. She's the lovely daughter of long time family friend, Karla. I have missed spending time with the family, and Natalie Jr., as she's called. She's named after her Aunt, so added the Jr. as a pet name. I was sent photos of her and fell in love with her delighted expressions and couldn't resist doing her portrait. I will work on a fairy portrait of her in the future, probably several. I am just starting on a portrait of her equally charming brother, Scott. Another adorable child full of mischief, but knows how to make you smile with his antics. I painted this portrait using my computer art software, Corel's Painter IX.5 while using an electronic art tablet, my Wacom tablet. I use a wireless stylus pen , not a mouse to draw and paint. This is not photo shopped or manipulated. I chose the colors, the brush sizes, shapes, the type of media to use. I used airbrushes, pastels, watercolors, and blended the medias with water (all choices in the art program)to create this soft look and style. I did use some special brushes to ad the fairy dust and water bubbles in the background to add some texture to the work. As I have to draw and paint every stroke, it took hours of work for me to complete this portrait. It does have the advantage of not setting up supplies, or cleaning up, and I can go back and make changes. I save the work in a photo file in stages, in case I don't like a result, or my computer glitches so I don't lose the work. I plan to upgrade my software soon again, which will give me better control and brushes, mediums to chose from. I love the challenge of working with digital painting. Please note that whenever I do photo manipulate a work, I do list it as such. I can do both kinds of work. More portraits to come soon!

splendid work! love the happy face of Natalie!

Artist Reply: Thank you Annette!!! It was tricky to get her eyes to match the expression she had. At first attempts she looked manic and crazed. I had to rework it to capture the right mood.

Cool artwork! (^_^)

Artist Reply: Thanks Dennis! I love doing children's portraits, they are such fun as subjects, much more animated in expressions than adults.

This is delightful!! She is such a beautiful child and you did a marvelous job with the image!

Artist Reply: Thanks Johnso much! I liked the photos of her smiling in delight so much, I t was one of those I just had to paint. I had to look at several photos to get her eyes right, as the photo for the main pose had reflection images of her mother taking the photo. Not what I wanted in the portrait. I had to study her eyes to figure out the right way to do them. Eyes are hardes for me, besides hair. Nothing can delight me as much as seeing children laugh and giggle.

Artist Reply: Thanks Blue Doll! She is such a cutie! I had fun with her freckles. I am working on becoming more detaild with portraits. Depends on the style and quality of photos I get for reference shots. I had some good close up detailed ones to work from for this portrait. ALso, upgraded sart software helps to have the brushes I need for details. WIll post more soon.
