(Can't turn back yet, Trixi...I'll explain....) The next mile on this trail consists of 24 switchbacks on a sometimes 45 degree slope. It seems that they are right on top of each other in places. While the park was closed in the winter/spring of 2004, there was a powerful windstorm here on the south side of Paul Peak. It knocked down a huge section of 100 ft. trees, vertically across the horizontal trails. It took the trailcrews about 2 months to clear the debris...many trees had to be cut several times. As it's a Nat'l Park, all the lumber remains, sometimes precariously held back by old stumps or soft soil. It can be a little unnerving passing thru this very large area.....BUT....
