INFO

Moai is both a painting and sculpture. The land features were created with clay which is raised above the surface and sealed in place. It represents a series of tropical volcanic islands with one island carved to represent a Moai statue face (as found on Easter Island). The central caldera is an active volcano complete with smoke The two smaller caldera's are both inert and are both lakes.

ABSTRACTION

The piece seen close up resembles an abstract painting. Its often hard to make out the various details among the spatters of paint, the raised features and the vibrant colors. But when one steps back the details appear out of the maelstrom. This is why I consider the painting to be an abstract as well as depicting specific subjects.

HISTORY

Moai started out as a completely different piece of art. Originally it was a Mardi Gras piece that showed a fatted calf float in a Mardi Gras parade. When the piece was close to being finished, it suffered an accident which destroyed one end of it. Repairs would have been difficult and would have altered the piece completely. So after a time I decided to reimagine it as something else. Moai is that reimagining.

Because I used raised paint on the original piece, the line work still showed through the base repainting. All of the lines and circles you see on the new piece are what exists of the original. Anything seen beneath the water was also part of the original.

THE MYSTERY

Built into many of my pieces of art are mysteries. Riddles, ciphers, unusual features and enigmas are commonly found and never explained. It is up to the viewer or the owner of the piece to figure out the mystery.

ON DISPLAY

The piece will be on display (if still available) in August at the Necrenomicon Convention in Providence, Rhode Island. For further information contact the studio at:

Variations on a Tumultuous Theme Shades of Color

These are variations on Tumultuism. The definition of tumultuism includes the use of color to create the broad works so far seen in the project. These focus not on black and white images but on portions in black and white or monochrome and portions in subtle shades of color.

Tumultuous Art (Tumultuism) - A theory of art which is disorderly, fractured and dreamlike in its presentation. It may exhibit a confused state, akin to looking through a piece of fractured glass at the subject of the art, similar to an acid trip or lucid dreaming. The subjects are often out of focus. It sometimes exhibits a similarity to cubist art, but is not always about strait lines to view and interpret the subject through. The form is determined by the Abstraction Point. This is the point where the subject goes from a recognizable state to a state of total anarchy and abstraction. This is also part of the attraction of Tumultuous art because viewing close up to the image it breaks apart into an abstraction. The further back you step the more the subject of the art jumps out. The concept also utilizes the artists theories in "harmonic Dissonance". Where many layers signifying different levels of color, texture and design are brought together in harmony. Tumultuism may also include strictly monochromatic art where color is totally removed from the equation.

Variations on a Tumultuous Theme Black & White - Monochrome

These are variations on Tumultuism. The definition of tumultuism includes the use of color to create the broad works so far seen in the project. These take a radical turn and remove color as a constant within the art and only focus on either strict black and white portraits or single color almost completely bleached from the art. With that in mind the following definition of Tumultuism has been changed to reflect this variation.

Written on the Wind - A Tumultuous Body Painting Session (Series in Progress)

This session was called Written on the Wind because it was done in the midst of heavy winds that nearly caused us to call of the session. But we came up with a different plan for the set we built and continued on to create the following images in the Tumultuist Style.
