ARTIST’S STATEMENT

The essence of my work lies in the process.  Process, the manipulation of materials, is behind all art, and is what allows me to be immediate and personal.  My intention is for expression and meaning to surface from discoveries made in the process, and not from any preconceptions.  Through water-based media, I rely upon its free flowing aspects—and with the addition of mixed media—I allow this chaos and chance to keep the surface quality lively.  Along with collage—which is at the core of most of my work—I can shift relationships by rearranging elements, let the work develop, and respond with adjustments, allowing the painting—without rules or limits—to come together by its own energy.  My imagery is non-specific, using natural forms as “jumping off” points rather than as external references.  The spatial depth is kept very shallow, allowing for associations to be sensed or felt.  I pursue a development that has vitality, is intuitive and fluid, and will result in emerging poetic images that persuade the viewer to new possibilities of thought.

JAZZ GALLERY

Jazz has always been of intense interest to me–the music, the musicians, the history.

In a live jazz performance, there’s a certain electricity in the air, there’s an aura of tremendous energy surrounding a musician– who’s in the deepest concentration– that can only be felt.

As an abstract artist, my approach to express this elusive “aura”, or other dimension, is to add– along with paint, collaged pieces of sheet music and typography–the use of unexpected materials, media, and textures, creating a force of visual energy that brings life to the work…that opens up another path, or layer of excitement to articulate this feeling of the jazz experience. My goal is for the work to have an intensity in its presence, and aggressively attract viewers…giving them something to dig into and contemplate.

BIOGRAPHY

For Bucks County, Pennsylvania artist Allan Hill, the essence of his art occurs in the process.  Relying upon chaos and chance to provide many options, experimentation is encouraged.  He keeps the situation flexible, makes adjustments in response to the developing work, and allows the piece to pull together by its own energy, without rules or limits.  “It’s a matter of the painting having more questions than answers, and to persuade the viewer to new possibilities of thought”.

Born in Carbon County, Pennsylvania, he has exhibited his lyrical collage paintings in national juried competitions, including the Denise Bibro Gallery, NY; Touchstone Gallery, Washington, D.C.; National Watercolor Society; Philadelphia Water Color Society; Collage Artists of America; International Society of Experimental Artists; Northwest Watercolor Society, and the Western Colorado Watercolor Society.

Mr. Hill’s works have also been exhibited in several galleries, including The Springfield Art Museum, Springfield MO; Toro Gallery, Huntingdon Valley PA; Brodsky Gallery of the Educational Testing Service, Princeton NJ; William Ris Galleries, Stone Harbor NJ; The Ambre Studio, Bethlehem PA, and The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.

A series of jazz themed paintings have been published as posters by Editions Limited, Emeryville CA, for worldwide distribution.  Work has also been included in several books by Rockport Publishers.  In addition, his work is in private and corporate collections including President William J. Clinton; Springfield Art Museum, Springfield MO; SmithKline Beecham; U.S. Healthcare; Morgan Stanley; Summerland Hospital, Las Vegas NV; Wyeth Ayerst, and Astra Zeneca.

He is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Art (University of the Arts), class of 1959, majored in Illustration, and studied under Henry C. Pitz, Albert Gold, Jacob Landau, Larry Day, Paul Keene, Leon Kelly and Jane Piper.

After graduation, he served with the 5th U.S. Army as an Illustrator at Ft. Sheridan Il.  Post-military, he worked in graphic design–and as one of the founding partners of the former Mandala, Inc., a Philadelphia graphic design studio specializing in corporate communications–Mr. Hill served as a graphic designer and art director from 1971 to 1989.
