Self Portrait

I am completely self-taught; my resume shows no formal education, classes or workshops in terms of art. I have found that this either hinders my opportunities or opens amazing doors. Since childhood, both drawing and painting have been outlets for me. I have always been intrigued by the way dust dances in sunbeams just as much as the amazing works of masters like OKeefe, Degas and Picasso. Though my work is free from the confines of any one particular style, these influences can be seen in my work.

I find that my work is best described when it is divided into two parts. First there are my painted works; with edgier bold shapes and lines in vibrant colors chosen to express my mood. Free flowing strokes that are always done to music, allow me to envelope the canvas with passion. Tears, laughter and circumstance come to life for me when I work with paint. I find it therapeutic when I work in this medium. There is a means of expression in it that I cannot find in anything else.

Secondly, there is the area of my work where traditional styles and shadows of soft subject matter whisper gently through charcoal and pencil. In my more detailed charcoal drawings the human form is often present. I find it to be tremendously expressive. I enjoy translating its many languages with light and shadow. There is something about the way light from a window can wrap itself around the tiniest hairs on the surface of the skin. It can illuminate the most beautiful features and blind us from the things we would rather hide. I thrive on capturing exactly that with charcoal and pencil.

Regardless of the medium or topic I choose as a means of expression. My true love for art and my insatiable need to create was always and continues to be a constant driving force.
