Artist Bio

Much of the artwork that I do is for personal pleasure. I do commercial and individual commissions, but I draw and paint mainly because I love to. Most of my art is done with charcoal pencil, but like many artists I began with graphite pencil because of the ease of use and the ability to redo mistakes. I prefer charcoal pencil now because of its wonderful flat, black look and it doesn't "shine" like pencil. Many people say that my charcoal pieces look like ink drawings, which is true, but in person they have a much deeper, richer quality to them than ink.

I will outline all of my charcoal drawings with a 2b pencil at the start until I like the composition and then I will usually outline the black areas with a 2b or 4b charcoal pencil and then fill in with a 6b (sometimes I just use one type). This process is always an adventure, because until I finish the piece, I am never quite sure that what I have set up to fill in is going to look right - what fun!
