Artistically, I have always been interested in the arrangement of space and the interaction of color, texture and shape through layering. Painting and Sculpting is the ever-expanding process through which I convey what I see and experience around me. Currently I am working in Acrylic, Watercolor/Mixed Media, Drawing and Sculpture, exploring issues of structural integrity, architectural (& material) decay, and artistic recycling. The diversity of these separate mediums allows for what I feel is a deeper retrospection of my creativity. Though wholly different independently, when melded together with artistic vision, these mediums begin to work as one in the same. Echoing the very thoughts I am trying to speak as an artist, the jump between 2D and 3D has been seamless, with pieces being produced side by side; almost interchangeable. My art represents the many facets of color, pattern and repetition that can be both seen and felt, whether actually or abstractly.
With my acrylic paintings, the courtship with the canvas through action and reaction hold a certain fascination for me as colors and spatial elements fall into place. I paint with a wide variety of tools besides the brush and am always looking for new ways to broaden the application of paint on canvas. Controlled abstraction and chosen method of madness dictate the construction of form and relationship of colors in my work. My paintings feed off of light and when displayed properly have the ability to submerse the viewer into an unknown arena of impossibly deep structural elements and color combinations.
My recent focus has been on elements of structure and the artistic aspects of recycling. With my small drawings and mixed media paintings on paper, I am dealing with both time and the role of spacial distortion. Capturing the structure around my immediate viewing area and sampling from different views to complete the composition.
With my sculptures, my goal is to recycle pieces that are used and disgarded. Miscellaneous Debris is what I have coined the pieces that make up my sculptures. Restructuring the mundane and the expendable to give it worth as art. Artistic Recycling. Different sight and representation.
Working with Watercolor/Mixed Media has opened up a whole new process for me. The colors react differently as does the building up of the piece. The painting process is more immediate in nature and allows a quicker resolve. While the creation moves more fluidly and rapidly, the composition and layout is more determined initially, mapped out and created through a different kind of vision and precision. In the end, the density of the color dictates completion.
