ALEXANDROS GIANNIOS

I was born in Thessaloniki in 1959. I studied Technical Conservator of Art. I worked with the painting, hagiografy and engraving for many years, but I was charmed by the mosaic. From 1996 to now I have been working in the Ministry of Culture, in the department of Conservation Mosaics. I participate in the conservation of the mosaics of St. George ( Rotunda ), the St. Sofia, the Virgin Mary Acheiropoiitos and other archaeological monuments. In parallel, I teach Art in vocational schools, cultural centers and seminars. I am a member of International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works ( I. I. C. of London ), I am also member of the International Commitee Conservation of Mosaics I.C.C.M. and the Association of Professional Painters from Thessaloniki and Nothern Greece.

Regularly I expose my works in galleries of Thessaloniki and Nothern Greece .

A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE MOSAIC

The mosaic is one of the oldest works of Art. It is the most stable and be altered, due to the fact that the materials are all naturally, and have the ability to withstand sun, rain, frost and even centuries of burial. That is why the mosaic is known as a recognized high art since antiquity. Since then it decorates the inside and outside of temples, wall houses, museums, galleries, concert halls, but also the external and hypaethral places. The mosaic, gives us the opportunity to add in all these places of life, a lasting shine. The materials I use are Italian enamels, marbles, pebbles, sorbets and golden tessera sheet with 24 carats, also from Italy. The mortar is authentic Roman.
