Self Portrait

Long Island and Catskill Mountain Painter Stuart Friedman

Stuart considers himself a regional painter. He currently lives in Long Beach, New York and Windham in upstate New York. His seascapes and landscapes are a direct reaction to his environment and how he interprets it.

His seascapes have a hint of the impressionistic style in the way he depicts light. Stuart feels everything in nature has a sound associated with it. Every painting should not only be a visual experience but the viewer should also be able to hear the scene…the sound of the seagulls, the crashing of waves, the howling wind in a storm or even the sound of silence.

Stuart’s landscapes are often of scenes that were painted by the original Hudson School Artists such as Thomas Cole and Frederick Church. Again, his goal is to capture light which can make any scene in nature a spiritual experience. Stuart has spent years hiking the trails in the Hudson Valley and the Catskills. Many of his landscapes are scenes he has come across on his hikes.

In addition to painting his favorite outdoor locations, Stuart also loves painting animals. He has had shows in Long Beach and DUMBO Brooklyn featuring dog portraits and has curated pet art exhibitions. Since living in Long Beach, Stuart has also been experimenting with surf art and abstract collage which he has shown at boardwalk art fairs in Long Beach. Stuart is also on the Board Of Directors at West End Arts in Long Beach. This is a nonprofit arts organization that promotes community art activities and gallery shows in his community.

Stuart was born in East Meadow in 1954 and his family moved to Lake Ronkonkoma when he was 5. He started off college in Binghamton as an art major and ended up going to optometry school in Boston. Even though he loves being an optometrist he continued to study art with various New York artists over the years. He has shown his work in many New York galleries such as the Salmagundi Club, Prince Street Gallery, The Bowery Gallery, The Edward Hopper House Gallery, Greene County Council of the Arts Gallery, Woodstock School of Art Gallery, Woodstock Artists Association Gallery, The Art League of Long Island Gallery, The National Art League Gallery , as well as many libraries and coffee shops over the years. Stuart says that as an optometrist, he has enabled people to see the world more clearly, but as an artist he can show people how to see the world in a way they never saw before.
