This painting is based on a photograph that I took in Northern California. I was intrigued by a collection of old pocket watches on display in an antique case. They werre beautiful and both of my Grandfather's (now long gone) carried pocket watches. It was a time of reflection for me and perhaps for some of you. A salute to "times past". Enjoy.

Beautiful work! Love this piece.

Artist Reply: Margie: thanks so much! This piece took quite a bit of time to do. I couldn't work on it for long periods at a time. But I am pleased how it turned out. I'm glad that the piece also spoke to you. Thank you again for supporting my work. Best regards, will

Mike Moore 14 Apr 2015

This is my favourite, Will. Quite imaginative and technically overwhelming.

Artist Reply: Mike: thank you so much. I think that this is one of my favorites also. It was a delight to do, but it did take quite a lot of patients. I could only work on it in short bursts, but I am pleased with how it turned out. Thanks again and best regards, Will

Carmen Junyent 29 Mar 2015

Mark Kokopelli Watkins, Artist 10 Mar 2015

Incredible details, a look a times gone by, the colors mesh together well, composition is perfect and both of my grandfathers carried one of these as well. G Pa Watkins had given me his, but it was stolen from me in college!! Your friend, Mark

Artist Reply: Mark: thanks so much for such generous and kind comments! Pocket watches do remind us all of someone we knew as kids. Seems like almost every older person carried one. Now, many people don't even wear a wrist watch. Rely just on their phones! I'm glad that this piece brought back some fond memories, although I'm sorry that the one you received from your grand dad was stolen. Have a good week. Best regards as always, Will

Darlene Foster 25 Jan 2015

Artist Reply: Darlene: you are absolutely right. It was lots of work and took patience, but well worth the effort. This piece was done on commission and the original has been purchased. I'm glad that you found it pleasing. Best regards, Will

Love this one Will. Reminds me of some of my early work.

Sara Edwards 06 Jan 2015

Wow! Amazingly realistic!

Artist Reply: Sara: thanks so much for your very kind comment. It is greatly appreciated. I am pleased with how this turned out, but it did take lots of work and patients. I again looked at your work and I'm quite impressed with your acrylic paintings. However, please don't leave your colored pencils in the drawer for good! Have a great 2015 and continue to be your creative self. Best regards, Will

Misty Tippens 02 Dec 2014

Beautiful, beautiful work!

Jack Pumphrey 23 Oct 2014

I am impressed with your skills as a detail artist, must take you several days to do a piece like this. Jack Pumphrey

Artist Reply: Jack: thanks so much for looking at and commenting on my work. Your comments are greatly appreciated. I like doing detail and using Prisacolor Verithin pencils helps. I also believe that using the matte surfaced Dura-lar polyester film also helps to acheive the results that you see. You are right. This did take awhile and quite a bit of patience! Again thanks so much. Best regards, Will

Anne Whiteway 05 Oct 2014

Kirk my friend this is off the charts. The time that it must have taken you(pun intended) Fabulous my friend.(:0)

Artist Reply: Ascension: No problem with the miscue on my name. Thanks so much again for your generous comment! This did take a bit of "time" to do. I would start and then stop, start and stop. Probably should have used stop watches as a subject! Actually, it wasn't too bad once I would get into the rhythm of it. Glad that you like the piece. As far as how long I've been drawing...I'm a little older than you. I just turned 70 last month. I too have been drawing or doodling for many years. All the 31 years that I was a University biology professor, I did cartooning. Many I used on my exams for a tension releaver for my students and others the school newpaper used. I became more serious and branched out to other media probably 7 years ago or so, but finally settled on colored pencils. I retired from teaching in 2011 and now have devoted most of my time to my colored pencil art. When I get tired of concentrating, I take a bike ride. Generally ride 30 miles a day when the weather here in Iowa permits. I guess that we are somewhat kindred spirits regarding our enjoyment in our art. It's very nice to share my art with you and others and to enjoy your art with you. I know that many others are also very appreciative of your talents. All the best my friend. Perhaps we will cross paths in person one day. Regards, Will

Maria Anna Machado 15 Sep 2014

the time is illusion...

Artist Reply: Maria: I suppose that it is, but most of us spend lots of time following it. What a beautiful way to spend our time. Thanks for your comments. Best regards, Will

Brigitte Hintner 15 Sep 2014

Fantastic idea of painting watches....bravo Will!!!!!

Artist Reply: Brigitte: I just wonder how much time each of us looks at a watch or phone or asked someone the time? These beautiful old pocket watches just spoke to me. Thanks for your generous comments. Art is where we can find it, I guess. Best regards, Will

Ingrid Kolster 15 Sep 2014

What a great painting! What a work!!! You have wonderful art in your portfolio.

Artist Reply: Ingrid: thank you so much for these very generous comments. They are greatly appreciated. I love doing detail and photorealistic pieces, so these old pocket watches shouted out "paint us". Glad you too enjoyed them. Best regards, Will

jennifer blenkinsopp 14 Sep 2014

Unusual subject and done so well.

Artist Reply: Jennifer: thank you so much. This subject is a bit unusual. Perhaps because we don't often see a collection of pocket watches these days. When I saw these displayed, I knew that I wanted others to see them as I had. I wanted to paint them in a photorealistic style inorder to enjoy them longer than simply clicking the shutter on the camera. I'm glad that you too enjoyed them. Best regards, Will

Dusan Vukovic 14 Sep 2014

super!

Artist Reply: Dusan: thank you so much for your comment. I'm glad that you find this piece pleasing. I enjoyed doing it. Best regards, Will

Marvelous Timely style, then the wonderful color tones and lighting in it.

Artist Reply: John: thanks so much for your lovely comments. They are greatly appreciated. I'm glad that you find the colors pleasing. They did take a bit of work to get them to look this way. Again thanks. Best regards and enjoy the remainder of your weekend. Will

Angel Estevez 13 Sep 2014

Excelent art!!! Really a very creative and excellent technique! My POD. Congratulations Will.

Artist Reply: Angel: thank you so much for these very generous comments and for your POD. Very much appreciated. These old pocket watches were so beautiful that they shouted to be the subject of a painting. I'm quite sure that viewers looking at them will also be reminded of individuals they may have know that carried a pocket watch. To "Times Past", best regards, will.

Sharon De Vore 13 Sep 2014

TOTALLY INCREDIBLE, WILL.

Artist Reply: Sharon: thank you so much. When I saw this displayed as the original watches, I knew that I had to try to render it as realisticly as I could.Thank you for appreciating it. Best regards, Will

Joanie Holliday 13 Sep 2014

JUST "WOW" WILL.. CAN'T IMAGINE THE PATIENTS TO DRAW ALL THIS WITH COLORED PENCIL... AMAZING !!! CONGRATS FOR THE PATIENTS AND FANTASTIC WORK.. JOANIE

Artist Reply: Joanie: thank you so much for your generous comments. This piece did take quite a bit of work and patience. I would work on it for awhile and then take a break, then back to it. It was gratifying to see the work take shape. I'm glad that you too enjoyed it. Have a nice weekend. Best regards, Will

marie-claire gallet 13 Sep 2014

WOW, I am speechless !!! Such a precision, so many details! Will it took you hours to produce such a piece of art !!! Congrats !!!

Artist Reply: Marie-Claire: thanks you so much! This did take a bit of patience. I could only sit and work on it for a relative short time and then would need a break. But it was very nice watching the work take shape. Fewer people even wear wrist watches anymore, let alone carrying a pocket watch. Perhaps this is what prompted me to entitle the piece "Times past". Have a very nice weekend. Best regards, Will

Bonnie Haversat 13 Sep 2014

Wonderful painting. I like how you show they are in a display case. Creates a nice frame for this lovely group of "Old Timers". ~Bonnie

Artist Reply: Bonnie: thank you so much for your nice comments. I too like the way the composition turned out. By the way, "Old Timers" also would have been a wonderful title for this work. Thank you again and have a great weekend. Best regards, Will

Andy Clayton 13 Sep 2014

Nice work Will. You must have the patience of a saint.

Artist Reply: Andy: thank you so much! No, I usually don't have lots of patience. However, in this case I guess that I did. I would have to take lots of breaks. I looked forward to doing the black background. I didn't need to be so exact. It was satisfying to see the piece take shape. Have a great weekend. Best regards, Will

Kate Gallagher 12 Sep 2014

Fantastic work Will!

Artist Reply: Kate: thanks so much! When I took the original photograph that this work is based on, I knew that I needed to try to render a colored pencil painting from it. Doing so allows me to enjoy the moment of discovery for a longer time. I was pleased with how it took shape and I'm glad that you too found it pleasing. Have a geat weekend. Best regards, Will

Heloisa Castro 12 Sep 2014

Beautiful work!

Artist Reply: Heloisa: thank you so much. Your comment is greatly appreciated. This did take patience and time, but the painting process allowed me to enjoy the moment of discovery of this subject longer than I get from just snapping the shutter of the camera. Have a great weekend. Best regards, Will
