52 x 76 x 2 Currently featured and available at Quidley and Company located in beautiful Naples, Florida. Quidleyandco.com Grand Central–42nd Street is one of New York City’s most recognizable transportation crossroads. The Lexington Avenue portion of the subway complex is served by the 4, 5 and 6 trains, identified by their green route bullets. The station’s historic tile work comes from an era when subway stations were identified through architecture itself—mosaic lettering, colored tile, geometric patterns and ornament permanently built into the walls. This piece brings that historic GRAND CENTRAL mosaic language together with the later graphic language of the 4/5/6 route bullets, connecting two distinct periods of New York transit design within a single composition. Re-imagined in recycled computer keys, the work adds a third visual language to the story: obsolete pieces of modern technology used to reconstruct one of New York’s enduring systems of information, navigation and place. For the artist, Grand Central also carries a personal history. Growing up in the New York area, Doug Powell traveled into Manhattan by train, often making the journey on his own as a young teenager. His father, an engineer, worked for a time in an office inside Grand Central Terminal, overlooking its famous Main Concourse and clock. These early experiences left a lasting connection to the architecture, movement and unmistakable character of New York’s rail system. What began as a familiar part of childhood has come full circle decades later, reconstructed one computer key at a time. #GrandCentralTerminal #GrandCentralStation #GrandCentral42ndStreet #NewYorkCity #NYCSubway #NewYorkSubway #MTA #SubwayArt #NYCArt #MosaicArt #MosaicArtist #RecycledArt #ComputerKeyArt #KeyboardArt #UpcycledArt #ContemporaryArt #FineArt #ArtCollectors #OriginalArtwork #DougPowellArt
