Deep in the Garden

Photo reference supplied by lockstock over at deviant art. Before I started drawing fairies and pin-up, I used to draw mermaids constantly. I figured I would do a few mermaids since I have not drawn them in so long. This was also a practicing with textures piece for me as well.

I like the detail of this painting. I also like the colors, although you could try to find a live model or work from a photograph.

I like the color choices, and love the hair. You've got a good concept for her pose--it's just the bend of the left wrist that stops the languid flow you're trying to establish. I like the tail fluke--very nice. Only three other things I'd (personally) check: the distance between her two breasts is a little wide (and her right one appears a bit bigger); her right hand and arm is different in hue/tone compared to most of the rest of her;and I'd get rid of the reddish brown area of her pelvis--the colors don't help her, and neither does the overt artistic mention of what I believe to be a blend of mer- and human #@&uality. It's very possible I'm reading the piece wrong in that aspect, and if so PLEASE correct me on your message board. I think the piece shows lovely movement and great potential, but sometimes the viewer's imagination can lend far more power to certain aspects of a piece than the artist's overt rendering can--"hint, hint, nudge, nudge, say no more--" :-)

Her tail fin is very unique and incredible. I enjoy seeing how each artist handles his/her mermaids. I especially like comparing their fins. The aquatic life has a poetic charm.
