De Schuilplaats

De Schuilplaats, (The Shelter or The hiding Place ) is my latest self-portrait, it had to be finished before the exhibition "Who am I if nobody looks" (Wie ben ik als niemand kijkt?), in the Carmelite Monastery (Karmelklooster) in Drachten (Netherlands). The inspiration came from my walk on the 'Way of Saint James' in France in May and June this year. When I came back I got the invitation to be part in this group exhibition of figurative and realistic painters, who all had to commit a self portrait. (Self portrait, De Schuilplaats, 30x40cm, oil on panel, 2005)

Ellen, this is a beautiful portrait painting. I have attemtpted a self portrait and I too found it took serious concentration and also there was fear of exposure for me. There are so many dimensions to each of us and in this one you have captured your pensive spirit. I just looked at your entire portfolio and as a new painter I am in awe of your talent! I like the way you can take the tecnhinques of the masters and make it contemporary. Thank you for sharing your work! You are quite an inspiriation.

such a lovely portrait Ellen, the rendering of fabric & detail is stunning, you own the light within skin tones and overall composition is compelling. And a beautiful model too...
