The technique used in this piece is a refined smudging. I did not use the standard method of cross-hatching. Smudged works, when done properly, give a very supple look and feel to fur textures. You'll also notice the super-soft shading on the tongue, nose and light reflection in the eyes.

You do very nice work Joshua!! I do pencil portraits as well...well learning as I go....I am from Tennessee too!...I love your work!
