The 20th Century Ltd.: Syracuse, N.Y. ca. 1939

This is a 29"x41" watercolor that was a commissioned work. It is the corner of Washington and Warren Strs. in Syracuse New York not far from Clinton Square and The Syracuse City Hall. The 20th Century Ltd actually passed through Syracuse and traveled down the center of Washington Street. The work was commissioned by Michael McComsey and he asked for number of unique automobiles including a Chrysler Airflow, a vintage Cord, a 1938 Buick, and a 1927 Chevrolet bob-tail stake truck. This is one of my favorite railroad scenes because of the unusual appearance of a massive New York Central J-Class locomotive working its way through the downtown of a major American city.

Talk about an impact! I used to live near Syracuse, many years too late I'm afraid, and would dream of seeing the mighty Hudsons rolling through downtown. I'd stand where the tracks once ran, close my eyes, and imagine the days gone by. This painting made the dream real. I know the time, the place, and the feeling. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

A collection of seemingly unrelated episodes that fit together like the stones in the Great Pyramid.

Our mutual friend Stan Avery told me about you and I'm certainly glad I checked out your site. I attended SU and now live in Fairport where the New York Central maintained coaling, iceing, and water facilities. I often walk by the site and wish I had been born just a little sooner so I could have watched that Dreyfuss Hudson and its train sweep by. A wonderful painting, the rain, evening light, everything evokes the moment perfectly. Howard Rowe

this is a exciting piece of work! I was born in syracuse in 1955! my grandmother lived in the heart of the city, as a small child she took me to my first movie at the theater there. I can imagine her living up on the third floor in one of your buildings. the wonderfull memories! the painting is so soft but detailed at the same time and i love your use of colors and light ! Artist Reply: I did not realize just how much I misse big Eastern American cities until I went to school at Eastman in Rochester just 70 miles from Syaracuse. I would walk back to the Eastman Dorms along Main St. at twilight and I was amazed how the cold air turne the light blue-violet and how it complimented the yellow-orange lights coming from the apartments and the stores along my way back to the dorms. I Miss the atmosphere very much and sometimes feel trapped here in Los Angeles in a prison of etenal sunshine. At least you get fog in Long Beach.
