CHARLES BOLIN- QUICKDRAW ARTIST

This is was first for me. This is pretty much, my first oil painting. I can't say why I waited so long. I am enjoying not having to rush to blend an area like the "fast drying" acrylics. So nice to take your time and blend where you place the brush instead of doing it all on the pallet. But then again, many of you already know that.

But back to my subject, he is a "mountain of a man." He is 6' 4" Charles Bolin from Deland, Florida, which is near Daytona Beach. Charles belongs to an organization called "Single Action Shooting Society." "Single action" describes the type of firearm that they use for their competition. The competition consists of the shooters being timed and scored on the individuals shooting at steel targets. It's very interesting and really cool to watch!

Leigh and I were invited to one of their meets this past December where several of the members, men and women, so graciously posed for Leigh's camera. Each signed releases for us to use their images for my portraits. These portraits from that shoot will be featured in my show that will be at the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, Georgia this September. These people were all "class act, down-to-earth" as could be. Hopefully a couple will even show up for the show.

This piece of "Cypress Scout," as Mr. Bolin calls himself, is oil like I said, on a "Claybord," Gesso- covered Masonite. The overall size is 18" x 24".

Wow! Denny, this is wonderful! The folds in the clothing, the skin tones, the beard, the way you aligned the pattern in the shirt through the folds, are all so detailed and perfect! Probably would have been a lot easier to put him in a solid shirt but you never take the "easy" way out, LOL!

I would just love to see Mr.Bolin's reaction to this painting...I bet he'd be overwhelmed..?? Magnificent work here, I just love it and all of the details you've captured. Oils certainly obey your commands:) !!

John Houle 13 Mar 2006

Your patience amazes me Denny. Over a hundred hours ... gulp. This is your best work yet as far as I'm concerned. Isn't it great to be able to blend and rework directly on the painting. Oils are great for that. and the richness and luminosity of the colors makes it all so real. 18"x24" yeah you're starting to work your way up to bigger paintings. That's great. I'm getting ready to start my biggest so afar as well. One of two bull elephants fighting. It'll be on a 60"x40" canvas .... I think I may need to borrow a bit of your patience for that one Denny. It's nice to see you back ol' boy, and I can't wait to see what you'll paint next. Later.

thea walstra 13 Mar 2006

Splendid art!

Christine brand 13 Mar 2006

Incredible rich detail, colors and tones...You are a Great! I love the pose and the realism...I thought this was a phto at first when it was uploading because I saw the zoom first...Exceellent choice of backgrd...it works wonderfully with the rest of the figure...it is nice to see a fitting backdrop which can make or break an otherwise MASTER work...I always wonder why some people don't think more about the importance of this element...some leaving blank space where even a shadow would help...Your leather and clothe has ASTOUNDING brush work...the shine of the metal, the fabric design and the attention in each paintakings hair of his bread is a testament to your unbelievable skill. A standing ovation in my eyes!!!

Hanna Stawska 13 Mar 2006
