Ah, it's kind of ironic... placing this image of "Labor Day" when we're just starting into a Memorial Day weekend. But when I lived in East Hampton, it seemed that everyone in the world (except local residents!) looked forward in great anticipation to Memorial Day. I, on the other hand, couldn't wait until Labor Day, after everyone left--and left us in peace. This is an effect of that peace and solitutude on the eastern end of Long Island, after the tourists and yuppies went back to their homes somewhere else. The foregroud rock also reminds me of the solidity (not necessarily solidarity) of labor itself--strong, capable, hardworking, persistent-- even as a rock. All things are conscious, maybe even sentient...
