About 15 years ago, I had the extreme pleasure of being invited to ride in the Good Year Blimp! Let me tell you it was the experience of a lifetime, to this day it remains one of my most vivid memories. Unfortunately, with a little help from mother nature, and natural disasters I lost all photos I had captured of the glorious ride! We flew around the Long Beach harbor, where the USS George Washington, a huge battle ship, was docked at the time. We continued on to fly over some other amazing sites, but what I still remember most about that flight, was the landing! We just happended to be driving by the home of the Blimp a couple of days ago, saw it flying overhead, and then realized about the time we would be passing by, would be the same time they were being brought in for landing. If you look closely at the photo, you can see several very long ropes hanging down that the ground crew must grab onto, and literally pull the Blimp down to the ground! It's quite a show, several of them end up in the air while other's grab even more tethers, until finally they have it under control and very slowly bring it gently to the ground. I must admit watching it was almost as much fun as having been on board! I'm also pretty amazed that I was able to capture all this while driving (my husband, not me)south on the freeway, which meant I had to shoot across about 10 lanes of freeway traffic, at the height of rush hour! Enjoy!
