Introducing my friend Gascón

© 2006 Armando Salas (Photo). © 2006 José L. Rubio Gascón (sculpture) ----- Introducing my friend, award-winning sculptor José Luís Rubio Gascón. I know Gascón since 1971. He's a well known baker and sculptor. If you taste his cakes, you won't feel only pleasure; you're sinning :-) His hands do pure magic in bakery and studio. I was with him in a very special event: few weeks ago the Council placed one of his sculptures in a new and beautiful public square, near my home. A second piece will be placed soon in another town square. It was a success for both of us: Gascón got a well deserved tribute in his hometown. While I was smiling, Gascón was almost crying when hearing the town authorities' speeches. My friend left the art because of his business and activities as a bakery teacher. Every time I meet him, the same "psalm": "You haven't the right to leave art. Your skills are a gift. It's your duty to give a legacy. Anybody can make cakes; only a few can do art". I did it again and again. And finally, one day he told me in a shyly way: "I'm working on new pieces. Thank you for your advices" and it made me very happy. When the news about my poster (Reporters Without Borders) appeared in the newspaper, Gascón was the first one to do a phone call and say "Congratulations, my friend. I'm so happy for you!". Thank you for your friendship, thank you for your art, José Luís!. --- I plan to let you know more samples of his amazing art. Upper image: sculpture made of...BUTTER!:-))) just to decorate the shopwindow of one of his branches.---Bottom image: Gascón and I, few minutes after his first sculpture was placed in the town square.

Armando, thank you for sharing the genius of your friend. Having been an Executive Chef for most of my life, I have seen competition of this type and ice carving as well. This work is exquisite. Great sculpting. Thanks for sharing. Miguel

Joanna Jungjohann 02 Jan 2007

excellent capture of this sculpture, Armando!

Roy Boobyer 02 Jan 2007

Wonderful sculpture by your friend. Such a shame that is created in such a transient material. Perhaps it could be cast in bronze?

Andrea Herrera 01 Jan 2007

Just wonderful Arnando, as a sculptor myself I can appreciate your sharing this with me. ~Hugs~ Andrea

Wow! Incredible sculpture of butter! Send me a cake...I want one!

Artist Reply: Ya estás bastante gordito, Jorge. Mejor, te mando unos tickets para un gimnasio. O montamos una revolución: aquella vieja idea de que tú serías el presidente de México y yo, Pancho Villa. Correteando por la sierra podríamos perder unos kilitos...:-)

Awesome photos

Almost incredible, butter!!! You are a genius, Gascon! But now i would like to see the sculpture that was placed in the square please :) Oh, and welcome on AW :)

Artist Reply: Every time I meet him, I call "Maestro" to him, not "José Luís" nor "Gascón"... and he doesn't like it :-)))

Armando, isn't it a great wonder what paths our lives can turn on to? Or, never get off really, just sway for a time in another directon. You have been telling him, and he would be listening, both you and his heart. Thanks for the introduction, and I don't know either of you in a personal way, but I am proud of you both!! Congratulations, Armando and Gascon!!!

Artist Reply: Thank you, Carliss. I thought it was a shame Gascón could abandon Art. Last month I was at his studio, and I am happy, really: he's working in 6-7 new pieces. This means he's enjoying art again. He's a "boy" :-) , full of creativity. You can feel in the atmosphere, there, the art is pure passion. I plan to take photos and start a thread to let all of you know "his world", his incredible creativity, his amazing talent. Happy new year. All the best to tou and yours.
