Koala

i really thought this one was going to be a pain because koalas fur is short and dense but once i got on a roll it went really fast.surprisingly it was the tree bark that threw me and to be honest i'm not sure it's right for a eucalyptus tree but i do like the appearance of it. this one is 9"x11"(23x28cm)and once again there's about a 30-40% loss in detail.

Beautiful work sheila! There is a variety of eucalyptus trees in Australia and the Koala's have their favourites. He's looks quite comfortable in the branches here! Well done! Tks for the explanation about the scratchboard, yes I remember doing this at school with the oil crayons. LOL

I don't know what a scratch board is but you've created amazingly real textures--I can almost touch the soft fur and hard branches...

Artist Reply: hi again sara. when you were a kid did you ever do art projects at school where you cover a page with bright coloured crayons, cover that with black paint and then scratched it off to see the patterns underneath ? this is like the adult version. you have a board that's impregnated with a coat of chalk and you put a wash of india ink over it. i then use tracing paper which i've drawn the outline of the image i want on and go over it again and it leaves a faint outline on the ink. then using exacto knives and other sharp weapons of distruction you scratch the ink back off to reveal the white underneath.hope that makes it a little clearer than mud. HOWEVER have you really had a good look at the incredible detail in your own work?!
